For most of its life, there was only one way to build a WordPress site: buy, install, or build a PHP theme. These themes sit on top of the WordPress core, query directly from a MySQL database, and display their results through various PHP template files. Back in version 4.7, the WordPress team released a REST API, opening up countless new ways to use the WordPress CMS. In this talk, we will look at the traditional WordPress theme model, its strengths and weaknesses, and then look at how we might improve that model by using WordPress to power a static site.
